SOLIDWOOD HOME SYSTEMS
SOLIDWOOD HOME SYSTEMS
NST
  • Once you really experience a NST home, nothing else compares……
OUR BASE… we are based in the beautiful Garden Route of South Africa. This is also the source of the high grade timber which distinguishes our solidwood products from others in the South African region.

OUR HISTORYNST was formed in 1967 by 3 charismatic and colourful men from interesting backgrounds, namely François Naude (Graduate of the Royal Aeronautical Society in London – BSc. P. Eng Stellenbosch), W.B.Scott of Pratt & Witney aircraft engines in South Africa, and Stan Thesen of the well known THESEN FAMILY of Knysna, with a long entrepreneurial history in the timber industry ranging from board and pole products, sailing vessels, kit houses and plywood. These colourful characters, together with the Knysna community and artisans, drawn from the erstwhile traditional, famous, furniture industry of Knysna, created the NST tradition, now continued by François Jnr, with graduate training in timber technology (UK), and a talent for design, organic site development, and operational capability.

OUR PEDIGREE
  • NST created and pioneered the first commercially available, authentic log homes in South Africa, under patent (TIMBERLOG).
  • NST designed and built numerous American-styled, up market, framed and brick veneered houses in South Africa during the early years.
  • NST in 1969 formed an affiliate company, namely NST BOLAND, to answer to the need for special earthquake-resistant structures immediately after the devastating earthquake in the Ceres, Tulbach, Wolseley area of South Africa.
  • NST created the first commercially available exposed, timber frame system in south Africa, under patent (MAINFRAME).
  • NST created an innovative, interlocking, modular frame system under patent (STRONGSTUD).
  • NST was an early participant and pioneer of the export of timber house kits from South Africa, to the international market.
  • NST successfully developed some 35 years ago, a method of compacting it’s heavy solidwood logs, using firm downward pressure, developed by threaded tension rods, which simultaneously connect bases and roofs together via the walls, and could be easily adjusted periodically after installation, to exactly regulate tension on a variable and selective basis, to accommodate the organic structural nature of wood.
  • NST as a result of its tension technology, pioneered cyclone resistant structures for the Indian Ocean islands.
  • NST, in South Africa, also developed the first:
  • Isolated, pre-cast, concrete footings for timber buildings.
  • Fully integrated, one–piece, shower cubicles for timber buildings
  • Use of hardwood dovetail and timber dowels in it’s wall systems, imparting superb structural strength with flexibility, while allowing easy dismantling of elements to accommodate future modifications
  • Use of “waxol” as stabilizer and preservative in the chemical treatment of wood…

…Now widely used by those that follow…
